Researchers map tick habitat to strengthen African swine fever preparedness
Texas A&M UniversityA small, nest-dwelling tick found across large parts of Texas could play an outsized role in how the United States responds to African swine fever (ASF) should the virus reach domestic or wild pigs.
In a recent study, researchers at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (VMBS), Texas A&M AgriLife Research and the Department of Biology mapped where Ornithodoros turicata — a soft tick species native to Texas and the southwestern United States — is most likely to survive and examined what that means for ASF preparedness.
The study is part of a $1.4 million Department of Homeland Security-funded research project through the Cross-Border Threat Screening and Supply Chain Defense (CBTS), DHS Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) Center of Excellence housed at Texas A&M. Led by Dr. Meriam Saleh, a clinical assistant professor in VMBS’ Department of Veterinary Pathobiology, this project seeks to understand whether Texas-derived populations of the tick could help sustain or transmit the virus if it were introduced into the U.S. — and how that risk could affect the food supply, trade and cross-border livestock movement. By supporting research at the intersection of animal health, border security and supply chain resilience, CBTS helps address emerging transboundary threats before they escalate into large-scale economic or homeland security challenges.

Efficient preparation of selenopeptides to ease fatigue
Tsinghua University PressFatigue is physical and mental exhaustion that can often be an early sign of severe health conditions. Current treatments for fatigue are mostly behavioral, including light physical activity, improved diet, stress reduction, and rest. Researchers are studying additional ways to manage fatigue, including supplements and enriched foods.

Team explores how oceans respond to global warming with a study of “feels like” temperature
Ocean-Land-Atmosphere Research (OLAR)A research team set out to discover how the apparent temperature, or “feels like” temperature, over the ocean differs from the apparent temperature on land and found that a pronounced land-sea contrast is evident.

Long-term MODIS observations reveal regional and seasonal variations in marine cloud brightening potential: a favorable coordinated response in the North Pacific during autumn
Science China PressUsing MODIS observations from 2003 to 2024, researchers evaluated candidate regions and seasonal windows for marine cloud brightening (MCB) worldwide by examining how key cloud properties varied with aerosol optical depth (AOD). Among five representative ocean regions, the North Pacific during boreal autumn (SON) showed a favorable coordinated pattern: cloud fraction and cloud optical thickness were positively sensitive to AOD, whereas cloud droplet effective radius was negatively sensitive. The study provides an observational basis for further evaluation of MCB candidate regions and seasonal windows. The findings were published in Science China Earth Sciences.

A chain entanglement-stabilized injectable zwitterionic polymer hydrogel: Towards long-term vitreous substitute application
Science China PressMany vitreoretinal disorders, including retinal detachment (rhegmatogenous, exudative, or tractional), macular holes, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, diabetic retinopathy, and vitreous hemorrhage, often require vitrectomy with retinal repair, followed by intraocular tamponade to stabilize the retina and preserve ocular integrity. The tamponade agents most used in clinical practice are expansile gases and silicone oil. Although these materials can effectively support postoperative retinal reattachment, they remain limited in terms of long-term stability and biosafety. Complications such as cataract formation, elevated intraocular pressure, intraocular inflammation, and retinal injury associated with silicone oil emulsification may still occur. To address this challenge, Prof. Jianhai Yang and Prof. Wenguang Liu (Tianjin University), together with Prof. Xiaorong Li and Prof. Xiaoli Xing (Tianjin Medical University Eye Hospital) developed an injectable zwitterionic polymer hydrogel based on poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC).
