New adaptive localization methods advance all-sky infrared radiance assimilation and improve tropical cyclone forecasts
Science China PressIn a paper published in SCIENCE CHINA Earth Sciences, a team of researchers developed new adaptive localization methods for all-sky infrared radiance assimilation. By better accounting for the vertical structure of cloud-related processes and dynamically adjusting localization parameters under different cloud conditions, the new methods significantly improve priors of model state variables and enhance forecasts of tropical cyclone track and intensity. The study provides a new technical pathway for effective use of cloud-affected satellite radiances in an ensemble Kalman filter.

High-yield GABA production achieved in lactic acid bacteria via ARTP mutagenesis and adaptive evolution
HEP Data Cooperation JournalsA study published in Systems Microbiology and Biomanufacturing reports a significant breakthrough in the microbial production of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Researchers successfully engineered a high-producing strain of Enterococcus faecalis, designated EM05, achieving a GABA titer of 64.2 g/L in a 3 L bioreactor. This was accomplished through a combinatorial strategy involving atmospheric and room temperature plasma (ARTP) mutagenesis, microdroplet cultivation (MMC) based adaptive evolution, and systematic fermentation medium optimization.

Structural and mechanistic insights into the UBR4-KCMF1-Calmodulin complex: a new frontier in cancer and neurodegeneration
Higher Education PressA recent study published in Protein & Cell by researchers from the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) provides critical structural and functional insights into the UBR4-KCMF1-Calmodulin (UKC) complex, revealing its pivotal role in protein quality control, cancer cell survival, and stress adaptation. The work, led by Professors Renhong Yan and Baotong Zhang, elucidates how this complex assembles and functions as an E4 ubiquitin ligase, extending ubiquitin chains on pre-tagged substrates to regulate protein degradation.
