Notions of genius and national character behind prestigious classical music programmes

In the new book "Nation and Gender in Higher Classical Music Education: Intersectional Perspectives", Swedish researchers describe how some of the most prestigious higher education in classical music in Europe still inform inform both the teaching and the repertoire about male genius and national character. The study focuses on the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music (1875) in Budapest, Hungary; the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (1919) in Tallinn, Estonia; and the Sibelius Academy (1882) in Helsinki, Finland. Their identity is largely based on notions of nation and gender. This can be partly explained by the countries’ ongoing struggles for independence at the time when the academies were founded.

Health equity after a colorectal cancer screening program

About The Study: In this cross-sectional study, following the implementation of an organized population screening program, colorectal cancer screening participation increased and socioeconomic disparities narrowed over time. Overall uptake in Hong Kong remains low, and some disparities persist in younger age groups (age 50-59 years), single households, individuals with a primary and secondary school education, lower-income groups, and public housing residents. Efforts to increase participation are needed in certain groups to ensure health equity.

Can your behavior in third grade predict outcomes in high school and beyond? A new study, published in Developmental Psychology, says yes.

Using longitudinal data tracking individuals from birth to adulthood, researchers found that third-graders who were more active and impulsive during the school day (indicators of lower self-control) were more likely to have lower academic achievement in elementary and high school, and fewer years of education as adults.
