New research enables methanol use in dual fuel marine engines
DOE/Oak Ridge National LaboratoryMethanol has long shown promise as a marine fuel, but reliably igniting it in diesel engines has remained a challenge. Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Caterpillar demonstrated a dual-fuel approach that enables diesel engines to operate on more than 75% methanol without sacrificing performance while maintaining fuel flexibility. The work could expand fuel options for commercial shipping and other marine applications.

Energy storage systems to make Europe’s energy supply independent
Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT)Energy from renewable sources needs efficient storage systems to stabilize power grids, make industrial processes more flexible, and guarantee security of supply. The European StoRIES research project, conducted by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in collaboration with partners from science and industry, has been an important step towards enhancing the development, provision, and integration of energy storage systems. This in turn is going to make Europe’s energy supply more resilient and independent.
