Extreme weather events driven by climate change have profound consequences for the sexual and reproductive health of young refugees in Uganda, according to a new study published last month in Global Public Health.

A study led by CIC bioGUNE, recently published in npj Genomic Medicine, demonstrates that integrating multi-omic data (genomic, metabolomic, and lipoproteomic) can identify hidden disease risks in healthy individuals. Conducted with a Basque Country cohort of 162 people, the research uncovered four distinct molecular profiles, one of which (cluster C4) showed a stable, silent risk for cardiovascular issues, such as elevated triglycerides and low HDL cholesterol, over a two-year period. This pioneering approach emphasizes the potential of precision medicine and bioinformatics in predicting disease before symptoms arise, supporting a shift toward prevention-focused healthcare. The study also underlines the importance of using local populations for developing context-specific precision medicine strategies and reinforces Euskadi’s role in cutting-edge bioscience research.
