Artificial intelligence developed by researchers at UCL has revealed a promising combination of cancer treatments that could help patients with locally advanced rectal cancer live longer.

Nine family medicine clinics across Granada, Madrid, and Barcelona piloted a program that taught family physicians to perform echocardiography with an AI-guided handheld ultrasound device.

The survey, part of a larger survey conducted by the Council of Academic Family Medicine Educational Research Alliance (CERA), asked family medicine residency directors about their program’s readiness to teach and assess self-directed learning skills.

In a new commentary published in Annals of Internal Medicine, Robert B. Shpiner, MD, a clinical professor of pulmonary and critical care at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, argues that the growing use of artificial intelligence chatbots for health information reflects both health system strain and a broader shift in how patients seek information.

The widespread concern about the effect of cellphones on reading comprehension in elementary school children has led to surprisingly little experimental research. New research by UCLA psychologists found a statistically significant relationship between owning a cellphone and lower reading scores — children who owned cellphones had poorer reading comprehension than those who did not. In fact, simply owning a phone correlated with worse reading comprehension, whether or not the phone was brought to school.

An innovative new program brings together two of the top disciplines at The University of Texas at Austin to help engineers become business leaders.

The new five-year program, a collaboration between the Cockrell School of Engineering and the McCombs School of Business, blends technical innovation and strategic business thinking. Students will earn both a Bachelor of Science in engineering and a Master of Science in business.

Burying underwear in soil isn’t a typical science lesson. But for students on Hornby Island, it’s one way they can learn how seaweed supports local ecosystems.

The activity and others like it are part of Seaweed School, a unique partnership between UBC and Hornby Island that’s training the next generation of coastal scientists while helping local students stay in their home community for an extra year of school.

We sat down with Dr. Bridgette Clarkston (BC), school co-creator and an associate professor of teaching in UBC’s Department of Botany, and Seaweed School alumna Ava Zielinski (AZ), to discuss how the school is helping students care for the coast they call home.
