We should talk more at school: Researchers call for more conversation-rich learning as AI spreads

Schools will need to become more talk based as AI makes it increasingly easy for students to bypass traditional forms of learning and exposes the limits of exams, researchers argue in a new study. The paper, by two researchers at the University of Cambridge, suggests that Generative AI is likely to push teaching into becoming more conversational, with chatbots acting as partners that introduce students to new ideas and even impersonate historical thinkers to stretch their thinking. It highlights a wave of emerging tools already prompting this shift, including AI systems that provoke students’ critical reasoning and a new “Moderator Bot”, currently being developed at Cambridge, that helps pupils switch perspectives and engage more deeply with one another’s arguments.

The simulated Milky Way: 100 billion stars using 7 million CPU cores

Researchers have successfully simulated the 100 billions stars of the Milky Way. This feat was accomplished by combining artificial intelligence (AI) with numerical simulations. This is 100 times better than previous attempts and took 100 times less time to produce. The same process can be used to model other phenomenon such as climate change and weather patterns. the study was led by Keiya Hirashima at the RIKEN Center for Interdisciplinary Theoretical and Mathematical Sciences (iTHEMS) in Japan.

New tool harnesses AI to navigate expanding world of metal–organic frameworks
