Photothermal therapy, as an emerging cancer treatment method, has attracted significant attention due to its advantages such as minimal invasiveness, low toxicity, and strong spatiotemporal control. It overcomes the limitations of traditional therapies, which often involve large wounds and systemic toxicity. Recently, a study published in Biofunctional Materials reported the successful development of a novel nanomaterial. This material demonstrates excellent photothermal conversion efficiency and good biocompatibility, showing promising potential as a long-lasting and highly effective photothermal agent in experiments, thus offering new possibilities for precise tumor treatment.

A team led by Professor Guosheng Tang from Guangzhou Medical University, Associate Professor Yutao Liu from Tianjin University, and Professor Bin Liu from Nankai University has proposed an innovative probiotic delivery strategy. They successfully fabricated single-bacterium microgels using gas-shearing technology, significantly enhancing the survival rate and therapeutic efficacy of probiotics in the gastrointestinal tract. This study demonstrates the potential of this technology in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) through the precise encapsulation of Escherichia coli Nissle 1917 (EcN). The Oceanography Society has selected Dr. Zhongping Lee of Xiamen University as the recipient of the 2026 Nils Gunnar Jerlov Medal, recognizing his transformative contributions to understanding how light interacts with the ocean, as well as his sustained leadership in education, interdisciplinary research, and collaborative work with meaningful societal impact. Dr. Lee will be recognized at The Oceanography Society Honors Breakfast, February 24, 2026, during the Ocean Sciences Meeting in Glasgow, Scotland, as well as during the Ocean Optics XXVII Conference in Ghent, Belgium, in September 2026.
