Frequently Asked Questions

How is EurekAlert! different from other commercial services?

EurekAlert! is a non-profit, mission-driven service of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and aims to facilitate fair and equitable access to scientific information by journalists and members of the public worldwide.

Content submitted to EurekAlert! is reviewed by a member of the editorial team against the eligibility guidelines before being made available first to journalists under embargo, if applicable, then freely available to the public. Payment of submission fees does not guarantee content acceptance. If your content submission is rejected, the submission credit is automatically returned to your account.

Each journalist-member of the EurekAlert! platform is vetted by at least one member of the EurekAlert! editorial team. Journalist-members must apply, meet eligibility criteria, and agree to the embargo policy before being issued a personal account to access embargoed content provided by publishers and scientific organizations.

Each Public information officer (PIO)-member of the EurekAlert! platform is vetted by at least one member of the EurekAlert! editorial team. Members must apply, meet eligibility criteria, and agree to the embargo policy before being issued a personal account to access free advanced notifications of forthcoming papers by publishers, and to gain access to paid content distribution services.

In keeping with the mission of facilitating fair and equitable access to scientific information, all approved content is immediately made available to all journalist-members in good standing. Content submitters may not choose to exclude or preferentially “target” certain cohort of journalist-members.

EurekAlert! does not provide contact information or "member list" of its journalist-members. Traffic reports only contain anonymous page view data.

Journalist-members and their news outlets may lose their access to embargoed content temporarily or permanently if they violate the EurekAlert! embargo policy.

How could content submitters track the impact of using EurekAlert!?

Content submitters may track the number of visits to their content on the “Reports” tab of the My Dashboard page.

Traffic reports include embargoed views – visits to the content by journalists during the embargo period, if applicable – and public views – visits to the content by all visitors once the content is posted publicly.

EurekAlert! does not provide contact information or "member list" of its journalist-members. Traffic reports only contain anonymous page view data.

Does EurekAlert! guarantee coverage or placements?

Unlike some commercial services that offer “guaranteed” coverage via automatic aggregation to non-editorial portions of news websites, EurekAlert! does not guarantee news coverage. EurekAlert! and its operator the AAAS believe strongly in the role of journalists in independently verifying and contextualizing scientific information for their audiences. Therefore, EurekAlert! is designed to facilitate earned coverage – news stories that have undergone independent editorial process of journalists and editors. However, thanks to its long history and the high quality of its content, many news aggregators pick up news releases on EurekAlert! in part or in entirety.

Unlike some commercial services that offer preferential or “sticky” placements in news feeds for a premium, all content accepted to EurekAlert! is organized based on posting time and/or subject area. Where available, visitors may sort/filter content by date/time.

Publishers and organizations may commission dedicated news portals on EurekAlert! to specifically aggregate content pertaining to their organization or event, such as a scientific meeting.

Content submitters may also purchase Sponsored Content banners to highlight content already posted to EurekAlert!. Sponsored content banners must link to a specific piece of content, not a general newsroom or website.

However, content submitted by news portal owners or Sponsored Content banner users do not receive preferential placement within other general news feeds on the platform. Read more about the Sponsored Content service here.

Does EurekAlert! offer monitoring services?

No. EurekAlert! does not offer monitoring services and encourage content submitters to identify free or paid monitoring services that best meet their budget and needs as part of their overall communication plan.

Does EurekAlert! offer translation services?

No. EurekAlert! does not offer translation services. Translations available on EurekAlert! in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Spanish, and Portuguese have been provided by their respective content submitters, who are responsible for the accuracy of the translations.
