Experts say a focus on re-wetting our parched peat would significantly dampen down the UK’s fire-driven carbon emissions and help mitigate against climate change

An anti-icing technology inspired by the natural structure of human skin has been developed. The surface features a multi-scale wrinkle design combining large and small wrinkles. Large wrinkles initiate cracks at the edges of ice, while small wrinkles accelerate crack propagation, allowing ice to detach easily and passively, without external energy input. This innovative approach addresses the limitations of traditional anti-icing methods by offering exceptional durability, resistance to environmental factors, and reduced energy consumption.

In regions where it hardly ever rains, water is valuable, and access to it is unequal. One such place is Alto Hospicio in Chile, located in the hyper-arid Atacama Desert region. Now, researchers have tested if making water from fog could be a solution to the city’s troubled water supply. Using fog collectors, they found that up to 10 liters per square meter each day could be collected; enough to supplement water needed for drinking, irrigation, and agriculture.

Nitrogen is essential for all life on Earth. In the global oceans, however, this element is scarce, and nitrogen availability is therefore critical for the growth of marine life. Some bacteria found in marine waters can convert nitrogen gas (N2) to ammonia (known as N2 fixation), and thereby supply the marine food web with nitrogen.

A new publication by researchers from the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford shows that the relationship between water temperature and the main biological mechanism by which the ocean captures atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) is far more complicated than previously thought.

Drawing on long-term time-series data from oceanographic stations such as the Bermuda Atlantic Time-Series, the research highlights how the quality of currently available data limits our understanding of this critical mechanism in the carbon cycle.
