Jean-Luc C. Urbain, MD, PhD, FASNC, professor of Radiology/Nuclear Medicine and Medicine, has been named president of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI). SNMMI introduced a new slate of officers during its 2025 Annual Meeting, held June 21-24 in New Orleans.

A dual-protective approach using botulinum toxin (Botox) alongside an anti-nausea patch significantly reduces salivary gland toxicity in patients with metastatic prostate cancer undergoing PSMA-targeted radiopharmaceutical therapy. The strategy led to a 30 percent decrease in PSMA uptake by the salivary glands without affecting the treatment’s cancer-fighting efficacy. This reduction may enhance treatment adherence and improve overall patient outcomes. The findings were presented at the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging 2025 Annual Meeting.

Neuroblastoma is a cancer that shows a strange behavior: sometimes it regresses spontaneously, whereas other times it becomes malignant. A team from Nagoya University in Japan identified a previously unknown “uncommitted" neuroblastoma cell state and found that mice presumed to have undergone spontaneous regression exhibited a higher frequency of these uncommitted cells. Gene signatures of the uncommitted cell state were strongly associated with favorable prognosis in human neuroblastoma patients suggesting that understanding these cells could help treat this devastating disease.
